Why Statement

My internship as a data analyst at Didi inspired me to combine my business background with technology to develop business intelligence software. As a data analyst, I was responsible for mass business data extraction using SQL, data cleaning and modeling using Excel, and analytical report-writing. In the business world, time is money. But I found that 30% of my time was spent on manual data cleaning and modeling, reducing the time I could use to analyze the underlying trends. I am not saying that preparatory work for data analysis is meaningless, but I knew that if it were to be automatized, I could have produced analytical reports more efficiently.

Therefore, I cut my leisure time and spent weeks taking MOOC courses to learn how to hard code the data cleaning rules and run linear regressions in Python. Ultimately, I wrote code that replaced hours of manual data manipulation and modeling. All I needed to do was to change a few parameters, such as observation period, to obtain key indicators calculated and charts. I was finally freed from the monotonous process of data extraction and cleaning, allowing me to focus my time and energy on analyzing Didi’s business operations.

This experience showed me the great potential of business empowered by technology. In the future, the enterprises that own important technologies will dominate the market. This realization ignited my passion for studying computer science and developing business intelligence software that is more technically inclusive and efficient. Therefore I chose the MSCS align program at Northeastern.

Accomplishment Stories

Driven by a passion for technology, I embarked on a self-learning journey to master programming. Starting from scratch, I leveraged online resources, from tutorials to forums, immersing myself in Python and Golang. This rigorous self-education was not without challenges, yet my determination never wavered. My efforts bore fruit when I secured a coveted internship at DiDi Global in their QA team. There, I developed a test case management system, significantly enhancing the team’s productivity. This practical experience, combined with my self-taught expertise, paved the way for my admission to the MSCS Align program at Northeastern University. This journey from a self-taught programmer to a recognized software engineer intern, and now a graduate student, underscores my dedication to continuous learning and my commitment to excelling in the field of computer science.

During the first semester at Northeastern, I did CS5001 and CS5002. In CS5001, I dedicated myself to thoroughly understanding the course material, investing significant time in mastering the concepts and assignments. My study strategy involved regular review sessions, proactive participation in class discussions, and seeking feedback from professors and peers. This hard work and dedication resulted in a final grade of 99.58%, a testament to my commitment and grasp of the subject. Recognizing my academic excellence and deep understanding of the course, I was honored to be selected as a Teaching Assistant for the next semester, a role that not only acknowledged my academic achievements but also offered an opportunity to mentor and guide other students.
